List of the winners at the 2019 CAF AWARDS and my reactions

The CAF AWARDS is one of the most prestigious footballing awards in Africa. Over the years we have seen African players dominate in different leagues all over the world, with the likes of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Asisat Oshaolat and others, it’s safe to say that Africa is one very gifted Continent. 2019 was a very exciting year as we had both the AFCON 2019 and Womens Football World cup 2019 take place.

Here are the winners:

INTERCLUBS PLAYER OF THE YEAR: YOUCEF BELAILI. It’s safe to say that with his contribution at the AFCON 2019, there’s no doubt he was taking this home.

NATIONAL TEAM OF THE YEAR (MALE): ALGERIA. Algeria clinched their 2nd AFCON title in 2019 with a very impressive run. Madagascar was a team on fire and definitely one that shocked the continent as they qualified for the Nation’s cup for the first time and got to the Quarter finals. Senegal on the other hand were runners up at the AFCON 2019. They all had impressive statistics but Algeria definitely gets the upper hand. Like they say it’s the results that matters.

This Dortmund star definitely had an exciting 2019. The 21 year old RB had 2 goals and 3 assits in the league, 3 assits in the Champions league and 1 goal in the DFB POKAL competition. Let’s be honest Victor Osihmen just picked up for Lille this season which makes him more of a candidate for the next award season. Samuel Chukwueze had an incredible 2019, became an important factor in the Villarreal team and sparked the attack of the Super Eagles at the AFCON. He had 5 league goals and 2 assits in the league, 1 goal and 1 assit in the Europa league and 3 goals in the Copa Del Rey. Left to me Samuel Chukwueze should be leading this poll but well……

NATIONAL TEAM OF THE YEAR (WOMEN): CAMEROON. Okay I have to say this is a very tricky one because the three African teams that represented the continent at the World cup were not on fine form. I honestly thought South Africa played great but had no end product as they ended the tournament last on the table in their group. Though Nigeria and Cameroon qualified based on best losers, they were knocked out in the next stage. Let us not forget the attitude of the Cameroon Female team at their last game of that tournament. So for me this is a NO.

MEN’S COACH OF THE YEAR: DJAMEL BELMADI. For me this is a Yes. He had one job to do and that was to win the AFCON 2019 trophy and he did. Although Aliou Cisse was exceptional, DJAMEL deserves the crown.

WOMEN’S COACH OF THE YEAR: DESIREE ELLIS. For me this is a question mark..No offense but she managed a team that got just one goal at the Women’s football World cup and zero point. Although the Women’s category is tricky, she has no business winning this award.

WOMEN PLAYER OF THE YEAR: ASISAT OSHAOLAT. This is a Yes for me. Although she wasn’t at her best at the World cup, she had a massive 2019 with Barcelona.

MEN PLAYER OF THE YEAR: SADIO MANE. Now this is a massive Yes for me. He had a great 2019. 22 goals and 2 assists in the Premier league, 4 goals and 3 assists in the Champions league. Won the Champions league and UEFA SUPER CUP with Liverpool. Took second place with Senegal at AFCON 2019. WHAT A YEAR, WHAT A PLAYER. He definitely proved that despite being a great player, he is a team player. This doesn’t take away the fact that Riyad Mahrez and Mohammed Salah had a great year. This year is for SADIO MANE….
